WHAT IS A GEDCOM

Provided by Steve Everitt

Gedcom is a file format developed by the LDS church which enables the exchange of information between different genealogy programs. Gedcom files are merely TEXT files formatted in a special way, so they can easily be exchanged cross-platform between Mac and PC users. GEDCOM is the acronym for "GEnealogical Data COMmunications." This computer data format was created by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
